KYC Based Caller ID is in progress: how it works and what you need to know

The telecom regulator TRAI will soon start consultations on a mechanism that will require the caller’s KYC-based name to flash on the phone screens of the person they are calling. This will help ensure that people know who is calling them and can avoid any unwanted calls.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has received a reference from the Department of Telecom (DoT) to begin consultation on the matter. TRAI Chairman PD Vaghela said that the talk is expected to start in a couple of months.

The telecom department has asked the telecom regulator to start work on a mechanism that will enable name-appearing on a phone screen, in accordance with KYC done by telecom companies. This will help ensure that calls from unknown numbers do not spam people.

The regulator has been thinking on similar lines for some time now, and this reference from the telecom department will help fast-track the process.

The new move by the telecom regulator will help identify callers as per their KYC (Know Your Customer) and bring greater accuracy and transparency than some apps that identify callers based on crowdsourcing data.
